On January 13th, according to multiple media reports, TSMC officially launched advanced 4-nanometer chip production at its factory in Arizona, USA.

This marks the first time TSMC has achieved large-scale production of advanced chips in the United States. Regarding this, US Secretary of Commerce Raimondo said, "This is a major breakthrough, unprecedented. Many people once thought it was impossible to achieve

It is reported that TSMC currently has two wafer fabs in Arizona and announced in April 2024 that it will increase its investment to $65 billion, an increase of $25 billion compared to the original investment plan. In addition, TSMC plans to establish a third wafer fab in the state before 2030.

It is worth noting that, although about 50% of the employees of TSMC's U.S. factories are from Taiwan, China, the media reported that the proportion of local employees in the United States will gradually increase with the expansion of the factory scale and the passage of time in the future. TSMC also expects that the proportion of American workers will continue to increase over the next five years as new factories are built.

It is reported that in order to support TSMC's investment in the United States, the US Department of Commerce approved a grant of $6.6 billion to TSMC's US subsidiary for factory construction in November last year. In addition, TSMC has also obtained low interest loans of up to $5 billion.

According to TSMC's earlier estimate, the first wafer fab located in Arizona will achieve mass production in the first half of 2025, while the second wafer fab plans to produce the most advanced 2-nanometer chips in 2028. It is worth mentioning that TSMC has agreed to adopt the most advanced "A16 chip" manufacturing technology at its wafer fabs in the state.

As a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC is a major supplier to tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, and AMD. With the rise of the global artificial intelligence boom, companies such as TSMC and Nvidia have become the main beneficiaries of this wave. In 2024, TSMC's US stock rose nearly 90% and its market value exceeded $1 trillion for the first time.
